Lionel Messi Retires! Move Comes After Argentina’s Loss In The Copa America Final

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football following Argentina’s defeat to Chile in the Copa America final. The Finals Chile won 4-2 in penalty shootout against Argentina. The two teams remained goalless till extra-time which led the match into a penalty shootout. Both teams missed out on their first penalty attempt. It was Messi for Argentina who missed the first chance. Chile later netted their remaining four shots while Argentina had to settle with just two and lose the final. This is the second consecutive time Argentina has lost in a penalty shootout at the hands of Chile. Lionel Messi hasn’t won any major tournaments with Argentina. Retirement The announcement came after the team’s defeat in the final. The retirement news also comes three days after Messi wrote about his frustration with the Argentina Football Association (AFA). “Once again waiting on a plane to leave for our destination,” Messi wrote on his Instagram. “What a disaster the AFA are. My God” When asked about the Instagram post the next day, Messi said he’d speak to AFA about his concerns after Copa America ended. But through some combination of his frustrations with losing the final and dealing with AFA, the world's greatest football player has decided to call it quits. It's possible that this decision to retire was made in the heat of the moment, after the emotional defeat in the final, and his fans will be hoping he reconsiders his decision. Messi's Argentina teammates were rocked by the news, with goalkeeper Sergio Romero saying that the No. 1 may have made a hasty decision. "I think that Leo spoke in the heat of the moment, because a good opportunity passed us by. Lamentably, the most f----- up is Leo because of the penalty. It's the worst I've seen him in the dressing room," Sergio Romero added.   An emotional Lionel Messi told reporters after the final that his career is over. Messi told TyC Sports "It's a very hard moment for me to think about what happened. In the locker room after the game I thought the national team is over for me, this is not for me......This is how I feel now. A big disappointment that this is happening again in a final. I missed a very important penalty. I'm done."   Retired or not, Lionel Messi is without a doubt the greatest and most skilled footballer the world has ever seen.   This is quite a shocker.
